Vaccinations

Vaccinations should be started at 6- 8 weeks of age. Often your new kitten or puppy will have had their first vaccination before they come to you. There is usually a course of 2 or 3 vaccinations to be given, usually at 3-4 week intervals. Most kittens and puppies are not protected against disease until 7-10 days after the LAST vaccination.

Vaccinations are critical to the health of your pet. Most of the diseases we vaccinate against are fatal if your animal contracts them, or at the best cause long term debilitating illness if they recover. Who does not want to give their new pet this protection? Your vet can advise you what you need to vaccinate against, and when your pet is due.

Once the initial vaccination course is set up, your pet needs to have a booster EVERY YEAR. This is important as once there has been a break in the course, they revert to a unprotected state and are at risk to those diseases again. The annual booster is important to primarily keep vaccinations current, but also to give your animal a general health check up.

At Tasman St Vet Centre, we tailor the vaccination program to suit your animal. We try to ensure that we don't adopt "a one vaccination program fits all" protocol. This means that once the vaccination program is set up we ensure that we provide your animal with protection that they need against disease, but the vaccination intervals are as far apart as possible in order to avoid "over vaccination".

How do I go about choosing a kennel or cattery for my pet

The best way to decide this is by inspection. Any boarding facility that is reluctant to allow you to view where your animal is going to stay should be viewed with suspicion ( although there are times
