Grooming
Most pets require some type of grooming on an ongoing basis. Some animals need a lot of grooming care, some very little. This should be a consideration when choosing what type of puppy or kitten you are going to get, or something discussed at the breeders or pet shop when you first make your purchase.
Grooming is important to:
Ears need to be regularly cleaned with an ear cleaner to prevent wax build up, and claws/nails of indoor cats and dogs, and those who do not wear their claws/nails down naturally often need trimming.
Some people choose to do their pets grooming themselves (long haired cats, short coated dogs) and others choose to go to a groomer (long haired dogs, dogs whose coats require stripping).
Grooming tools will vary depending on your animals coat- if you are unsure, ask your vet or groomer for their advice.
Grooming is important to:
- keep your pets skin healthy- the skin is the first line of defence against disease,
- keep their coat looking glossy- by stimulating natural oils to keep a nice sheen on their coat, (if they are also on a good diet!), and to
- prevent infections - matted hair around the opening to ear canals or between toes often trap grass seeds or bacteria or yeasts which can then cause painful between the toe or ear infections.
